May 6 2004 - New Boat - Jeff Susanj
I have been threatening to buy a cabin boat for years now and we finally did it.  We bought Lloyd Robert's Rhodes 22 knockoff.  This is the boat he sailed at Carlyle before he bought his Catalina 27.  This is definitely a project boat.  Here are pictures.

Started off with LOTS of wind and whitecaps,  Linus delayed the start as the wind settled down.  Lloyd set a dubious record capsizing his Mutineer TWICE, once in the harbor with a mistep on the side, and again in the river in an apparent effort to clean the mud out.  To his credit he righted it and sailed it dry without assistance, the first time that I can recall that happing while I was there.

We had two races, a one lapper and a two lap.  The first race was complicated by a drifting jibe mark, which at the first rounding was dead abeam of the windward mark.  We ignored it and went for the leeward.  The wind had gotten spotty, complicated by the fact that the course was beneath the bluffs which is generally bad with a NE or N breeze.  Al Leiber did well in his Laser as did Rick in his Lightning.

Afterwards we assembled on the deck for a cookout.  By the time that was over the wind was pushing the high teens and whitecaps could be seen in my headlights as I left.  I was presented with a card and cake to celebrate my birthday on 8/8 (67 in case you care).  I thought the cake was great, as did everyone else, as little was left. If you aren't sailing Wednesdays you are missing a great time!Relaxing after the races.
August 11, 2002 - Sunday Racing - Steve Wyers
Sunday didn't start out promising, but a quick look at the local satellite showed the edge of the storm to be near, so I went up to Valley.  A few who were there left, but those who stayed had a good sail.  Diana and I did race duty, with Rick, Phil/John Birtwistle, Jerry Chapman, Don Hanson and Greg/Corina racing.

The day cleared up nicely, and we were treated to the sight of a flock of pelicans overhead, on their way upstream. The wind was really difficult, veering from E to SW as we set the course.  We chose S and ran off 4 one-lap triangles, finishing about 4:00.  We had to take a detour down to the bottom of Eagle's Nest to recover Don's son in a canoe, who had misjudged the current strength. It gets stronger by the island, particularly on the Missouri side.

Had an odd happening as I set the first mark.  The wind swept it against the boat, and I unknowingly cut the line with the motor. It hadn't gone near the motor, so I didn't suspect anything. I didn't find out until I retreived the mark to reset it as a jibe, and discovered the anchor still attached but with out the line!  The motor had re-tied the anchor to the mark even as it cut the line!!!  I had set the mark from the aft side of the boat, which is a lesson to be learned.  From now on I set from the front!

Great night for a sail..except for the wind, which had filled in during mid-afternoon and vanished as more boats hit the water.  Linus, ever the trooper, set a course, and we circled the committee boat waitiing, but about 7:00 he blew abandon.  We sailed slowly in riding wisps of wind, to the usual barbecue.

As I fell asleep last night I realised that freezer paper was the ideal medium to put the burgers on, and it worked fine.  I doctored the burgers up tonight and let them defrost as we sailed.  However, if you members see papers covering something on a table in the club, be careful.  It's your dinner!  One of us almost tipped the table over to get it onto the deck. Wish more of you could be there!

Beautiful night for a race...cool, good wind.  We ran a big triangle across the river and back, with a W-L for the Muts.  Got it done and boats away before dark.  Cooked Brats on the deck, which took longer then it should have.  Perhaps there's too mych junk in the grill.  In any case we got them cooked and were home before 10:30.

Here's a picture of our new member Dave Lay with Bob Waterhout on his left. Some of you probably remember Bob from the 90's when he was very active in the MDC Sail Club before leaving for greener pastures.
