Welcome AP English Language and Composition /IB English A1.
English in the eleventh grade at JCIB, as you can see from the official course title, is packed with material. We will
even add the British Literature requirement from the Alabama Course of Study. This course includes the study of
rhetoric as a tool for composition and literary analysis. We will be engaging in a great deal of discussion and reading
as well as composition. At the end of the course you will be taking the AP Language and Composition test.

In the Classroom
New textbooks have arrived. We will be using several new books and most of your reading for the year is available in
these texts. If you prefer to have your own copies of major works for annotation, a list of works to be studied is included
in your summer assignment.
If you are shopping for supplies, you might consider these suggested items:
- a flash (USB) drive to hold copies of your documents-for all classes
- a binder (1 or 1 1/2 inch)
- section dividers for the binder
- a composition book
- dark blue or black pens
- highlighters
- paper (filler and computer)
- composition book (speckled-journal type/not spiral)
- index cards (for research and flash cards)
- MLA book (listed on summer assignment)
- small sticky notes (useful in marking your notes in school or library texts)
