FLOWERS 911:
September 11, 2004
I spent the summer of 2004 out of New York, as I
do most summers. I returned on Thursday, September 9, taught on
Friday. On Saturday I walked around the city with my camera, hoping
to reorient myself, get back in tune with city life. Then I realized
I'd left the charger for one of my cameras up in the country. Since
I also wanted a new battery for the camera, I grabbed a cab down
to J&R. The cabbie was complaining about all the traffic. But
hell, I was just back from the country, any traffic would have seemed
unnerving.
I wandered around downtown, taking some photos of people, and generally
headed toward the unusually crowded World Trade Center site. Only
then did I remember it was September 11. I continued to randomly
point and shoot, but found myself drawn to the floral tributes that
had been placed along the wire fence. I've chosen 11 photos here
to commemorate last year's memorials and as a reminder, perhaps
to myself, not to forget this year.
