Why a separate category for Texas Music? You can find just about any kind of music in Texas, but the acoustic and alt. country music we cover here is performed in a distinctive style by many Texas musicians. Distinctive enough to spawn a movement among some fans to center their interest on the Texas performers almost exclusively.

The genesis of Texas music can be traced back to the late Sixties, when  Houston became the home base for some very talented singer/songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt, Eric Taylor, Steve Fromholz, and Guy Clark. A few years later, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings left Nashville for Texas, and transformed the Texas honky tonk circuit into something resembling what we call alt. country today. To see a picture of many Texas musicians- circa 2000- take a look at Texas Monthly’s A Great Day in Austin.

Rockzillaworld is one of the best sources of high quality reviews of albums from Texas (and a few from other areas).  For information on happenings in the Austin area, try Austin Americana.
