Multipurpose Neck Jig

neck_jig_1.jpg
This is a jig system I designed and built to help with some of the more critical tasks needed to make a neck. It's based on aluminum extrusions and is very stable and strong. Here's what you're seeing:
1. Main jig with provisions for clamping to a work surface. The neck blank is clamped into the center channel for working.
2. Vertical clamps for attaching fretboards and holding the piece solidly
3. Masonite shims to elevate the work in the jig's channel
4. 1-1/4" steel tubing attachments used as rails for the radius system
5. Fretsaw attachment - the entire piece slides into horizontal slots running the length of the main channel
6. Router carriage - freely rolls up and down the main channel on 6 sealed bearing wheels.
7. (2) router bases with different radius's for carving fretboards
8. A simple radius sanding block used with the neck clamped up high in the jig.

The jig set up for routing a trussrod channel. The sides of a neck can also be done by angling the blank in the channel while the router runs on a straight path. Note the blank in the channel.

Radius set-up. The wooden base has rails that match the desired radius for the fretboard. They are lined with UHMW for ease of motion.

The fretslot set-up. This portion of the jig has a new companion - a fret press that is mounted in much the same way.

Yamaha BB1200S
Headstock Repair

yamaha_repair_1.jpg
An unfortunate incident involving a gigbag, a garden gate, and a pair of 150 lb. dogs!

yamaha_repair_2.jpg
The headstock was bent back, separating the fretboard...

...and splitting the side laminates of the 5 piece neck

yamaha_repair_4.jpg
The laminates were filled and sealed with CA glue

yamaha_repair_5.jpg
Then the color was blended by brushing in various small quantities of nitro lacquer

yamaha_repair_6.jpg
Polished clear nitro lacquer was brushed on and polished level with the original finish
