Gaia is the ancient Greek earth mother goddess who brought forth the world and the human race from the gaping void of chaos. Later, in Homeric Greece, she was known as the "Mother of the Gods," and "wife of starry Heaven." Later still, U.S. astronauts, returning from deep space saw the earth as a whole and called the planet Gaia.
