Make A Plain Dress - the Zipper

This is the third part of making a Plain Dress.  It will give the pictures and instructions for putting in the zipper.  This is not the way that most folks put in a zipper but it is the quickest and easiest way that we have found.  Now I must add that we have really given more detail on this than we do at home because we assume that folks reading this will be complete novices at sewing. If you already know how to put in a zipper then by all means do it the way you know.

This is the back of the dress where we will be putting in our zipper.

Then we fold over about an inch and press down again.  This gives a nice finished edge for the zipper to be sewn to and will cut down on loose threads that would eventually become stuck in the zipper.

Now we begin pinning on the zipper.  You unzip your zipper and then place the top end of one side even with the neck edge of your dress and pin it securely in place.  Your pins need to go horizontal so that when you are sewing you can just go across them.

Here we have the zipper pinned to the dress completely.  It is now ready to sew.  You will need a zipper foot on your machine to sew this properly.

The full length of the zipper is sewn in on both sides.

This shows the outside of the dress at the zipper to show how neatly it looks when done.

Our first step is to fold over about a fourth of an inch and press this down.

Once you have folded you need to press it down with a hot iron to allow for ease in pinning on your zipper.

This is showing that we place a pin every couple of inches - it really makes the sewing much easier.

Our zipper is sewn in and here is the picture of how it looks.  Pretty neat.

Here we see the bottom of the zipper.  You will sew down to the end and then cross over the seam just ender the metal band at the bottom of the zipper and then go back up the other side.

Praise the Lord! Another zipper finished and ready to zip!!!
