Zoids Customize Parts!

When Zoids were re-released in Japan starting in 1999, a lot of us longtime Zoiders were happy just to be able to easily get ahold of a lot of the kits again. Little did we know that Tomy had a really big surprise waiting for us...

Walk slowly...and carry a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig gun...In addition to reissuing the old kits and pumping out a few new kits, Tomy decided to expand on something they started during the original run of Zoids. Back then, there were two sets of weapons released, one Helic and One Zenebas, called "Custmize Parts". These parts were add-on weapons that could be used to upgrade the firepower of your Zoid. Individual sprues from these kits were already in circulation with certain kits, with the kits sold as "MkII" versions (AKA, Gojulas MkII, Iron Kong MkII, etc.). The biggest problem with the Custmize Parts was, though, that they seemed to be aimed more for the larger battery-op Zoids than the smaller units.

Leave it to Tomy to improve on their old formula. With the re-release of Zoids, the add-on parts were not far behind. The appearance of modified Zoids in the anime served to fan the flames of customizing fire that quickly engulfed the world's Zoid-lovin' populace. As with the Zoids themselves, Tomy re-released some of the old add-on parts, but also had a ton of ALL NEW parts aimed mostly for the smaller Zoids! To say these were popular is akin to saying Commies are red...

Initially, the new Customize Parts sets were fairly versatile, and could be used with a wide range of Zoids. Some of the more recent sets seem to be aimed at one or two Zoid types in particular (these being the Liger Zero and Berserk Fuhrer parts). But...if you really want your Shield Liger to wear some of the Liger Zero Armor, all it takes is a hobby knife, some sandpaper, the right paints, and a lot of patience...
