Editing TOD Files with iMovie 08/09
Valid
for HD7, HD5, and HD3
The first procedure can only be used with 1920x1080, 1440CBR, or 1440VBR video clips that are less than 4GB in length. Shots, therefore, can be no longer than about 15-minutes.
If you need to shoot clips longer than about 15-minutes, you must shoot 1440CBR and follow the procedure in Appendix A,
The procedure in Appendix A cannot be used if your Mac does not have a FireWire port.
Do not install JVC OS X Drivers if using iMovie 09
Import
from SD Card
You
can use an SD card in your HD7 just as you can use the
HD7’s harddisk.
Import
from GZ-HD7
Connect your computer to the
camcorder using the bundled USB cable.
You should have the HD7 powered by its AC adaptor.
Open the camcorder’s LCD. When you power-up the camcorder, you will see this message:
PLAYBACK ON PC
BACKUP
Press down the joystick to pick PLAYBACK ON PC.
You will soon see one or two disks mounted on your computer’s Desktop. (With Windows, you may need to open the Computer icon to see the mounts.)
The EVERIO_SD card may be mounted.
The EVERIO_HDD harddrive will always be mounted.
Open the either drive’s icon and you will see three or four folders.
- The PRIVATE folder holds dynamic information the HD7’s operating system utilizes.
- The DCIM folder holds photos (may be empty).
- The SD_VIDEO folder holds video files.
- The EXTMOV folder holds any TPD movie files that have been stored on the HD7 (likely to be empty).
Inside you will find one, or more, folders named PRG###.
Be sure to unmount the drive(s) before turning off the camcorder or disconnecting the USB cable
- .
-
Note, each PRG### folder has movies that are named MOV001.TOD to MOV999.TOD. Because there may be multiple movies with the same name, you need to keep movie files in separate folders.
Editing TOD Files
MPEG Streamclip is able to batch convert TOD files and so using it is far more efficient than using the workflow recommended by JVC.
MPEG Streamclip is able to import TOD files without installing the JVC software. You may be asked to purchase an MPEG-2 component from Apple. If asked, you must do so.
Download Version 1.9.2, or higher, (www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html) and install under OS X 10.5. See the “Squared5” website if you are using OS X 10.6.
Launch the MPEG Streamclip application.
Issue List > Batch List.
Click the Add Files… button.
Browse to a PRG### folder, and select all MOV###.TOD files. (Do not select the MOV###.MOI file.)
Click the To Batch button.
The following MPEG Streamclip: Please choose a task dialog box will appear. Select Export to QuickTime.
Click OK.
Browse to the disk where you want the converted files to appear.
Click the New Folder button, and name the folder.
Be sure you give each output folder you create a unique name.
Click Select.
Select the Apple Intermediate Codec.
If you shot 1440x1080, set a Frame Size of: 1440 x 1080 (4:3)
If you shot 1920x1080, set a Frame Size of: 1920 x 1080 (16:9)
Optionally, click the Adjustments… button.
Set the Saturation slider between 80% to 90%. This reduction in color saturation should reduce the need to use color correction, when editing, to lower saturation. (You may still need to alter color balance and/or make other adjustments.) Click the OK button.
Click the To Batch button.
If you have more folders to convert, click the Add Files… button.
Click the
Go button to
begin the conversion.
After the conversion is complete, close MPEG Streamclip.
MPEG-2 M2TS
(Transport Stream) data is on-the-fly demuxed to video and
audio Elementary Streams. The video stream is decoded and
then recoded to I-frame MPEG-2 (AIC). Because video is
transcoded to I-frame MPEG-2, quality is preserved. The MP2
audio stream is decoded to 48kHz PCM audio.
In iMovie,
issue
File > Import Movies.
You can choose an internal or
an external harddrive.
You
can import clips into an existing Event or create a new
Event.
If you
shot 1440x1080, then import as
Large.
If you
shot 1920x1080, then import as
Full.
Click
the
OK button.
The files will be imported and thumbnails generated. This
can take a long time.
When
the import is complete, you will see this message.
Click
OK.
