Peter Krieg, the only smoke balloonist in the world, performed this ascent at the Hudson Hot Air Affair in Hudson, Wisconsin in February 1998.

The envelope is held up in the center by a pole, and stretched over the oil fire

The envelope begins to fill with black smoke. It then lifts off the center pole.

The final heating with a propane burner fills the envelope

Peter Krieg dons his parachute

The envelope just after the tie down is cut, beginning a rapid ascent

Peter is hauled up quickly, suspended beneath the envelope by a harness

Reaching the peak of the climb in just 3 minutes

Peter cuts loose and deploys his parachute

The envelope begins to invert, by the weight of the tied on sandbag

Billowing smoke, the beast dies and falls to the ground
