Song Stories

This song was recorded at East Hall Studios in Fayetteville, Arkansas (www.easthall.com) and was recorded and mixed by Chris Moore. The entire song is just electric bass, drum machine, and a bit of programming. I used my 1996 Warwick Fortress Masterman Five String with a Digitech Bass Synth Wah and a few effects concocted on my Digitech BP8. I co-wrote this tune with Chris Moore. Basically, I walked in with a song I had been jamming on live and asked Chris to tinker with it within a drum’n’bass/electronica vibe. Since Chris is known for sitting on his couch and drumming on his leg (inside joke from college), he did the drum machine, programming, and some of the arranging. I had a drum beat that I was using, but I dig Chris’s much more. Oh, I did all the bass stuff.

I wrote this piece with another’s artwork in mind. A friend of mine, Will Jayroe, came up with a web comic called Particle Sphere. You may have noticed the link on my links page, but incase you didn’t, here it is:

It’s currently on hold for the moment, but you can read the back issues (FOR FREE!!!) which is something I highly recommend. The comic is about a girl that has the power to generate a sphere of energy around her person. With this sphere, she can travel though space, time, and dimensions. Pretty nifty. I took it upon myself to write a tune for this comic. I wanted to write something that was sort of vague while standing alone, but would clarify itself in conjunction with the comic. At the same time I didn’t really want to overwhelm the comic and distract the reader. So I wrote a pseudo-funky, electronica-ish song that would fit (hopefully) with the vibe of the comic. “Blastula” seemed to be an appropriate name as it is something we’ve all had. A blastula or blastosphere is a spherical protective covering that forms over fetuses while in the zygotic stage. So, yeah, we’ve all had one. In a sense it is a sphere that enabled each of us to pass through time, space, and (perhaps) dimensions. Cool, huh?

There it is; the story of “Blastula”. You can download the tune (FOR FREE!!!) at  http://extendedrangebassist.com/ERB_DM.htm . Just scroll down to the middle of the page, and you’ll see it. Then go read Particle Sphere while you listen to the song. Let me know if it fits.
