p h o t o g r a p h s d a v i d  s  r o s e n

I begged my grandmother for a camera at the age of four; since then, I've never been without a camera…

My recent photography is exclusively of young people — children and teenagers. I try to get past adult stereotypes to show their spirit and energy with honesty and sensitivity. I try to capture some of the gestures, subtleties, and nuances that reveal their interactions with each other, and with the outside world. I have shot kids all over the country and abroad, finding them to be more alike than they are different.

These pictures are spontaneous, but not stolen. I am respectful of the kids I photograph, and spend enough time for them to become comfortable with me,and me with them. Nearly always, the kids I shoot are aware of the camera, but are not posing for it.

I work in a variety of formats, mostly in black and white. I do my own printing. My work has been published and exhibited, and it is found in both public and private collections. I am working — very slowly — on a book.
