Notes for Benjamin Keene:

In the book Keene Family History and Genealogy, by Elias Jones

The following statement is made.  However IT IS INACCURATE.

From Benjamin Keene and Anne Keene, his wife of this line were born two c hildren.  Benjamin Keene and William.

Benjamin born 1804 married Annie Slocum and had two children, Susie Keen e and Adele Keene, who were born in the State of Missouri, where Benjami n Died.

It only lists one marriage of Benjamin.  The marriage to Annie Slacumb wa s his SECOND marriage.  He married Jane Waters was his first wife and th e mother of five of his children.  Having two more daughters by Hannah An n Slocumb.

The IGI list show Jane W. Parks married Benjamin Kain April 4, 1827.

Notes for Jane Waters:

The Court Case Benjamin Keene and Jane W. Waters filed June 1838 held som e surprises.   In the court case files it states that a Clement Waters le ft 40 acres of land to his daugher Jane W. Parks, now the wife of Benjami n Keene of Baltimore.  Therefore it is case to assume that Jane W was mar ried before she married Benjamin. The land was called "Beckers Island."

On the 1850 Maryland Census, Dorchester County, Dist-1 it lists

Benjamin Keene age 45

Jane age 37

Mary A Parks age 18

Josiah Keene age 11

Cornelious Keene age 6

Robert Keene age 3

Joseph Harris, 18 (Laborer)

I am assuming that Mary A. Parks is either her daughter from the previou s marriage or maybe a sister.  Unsure at this time. (2/20/2004)

Atchison Globe Newspaper April 25, 1878 notes Columbus was Constable of East Atchison, Mo.

In the Atchison Globe, Sept 22, 1879  "Constable Kean says that affairs have grown so bad that he will resign unless the town is incorporated and a force of policemen put on. There is about as much work for policeme n in East Atchison as there is in Atchison and it is at present all done by one man and that man is Keene.  It would cost only about twenty-five dollar s to have the town incorporated and it out to be done."

Found in the Atchison Globe, May 11, 1880

"Constable Keene and the police force last night arrested Dr. Byers, a ma n of about sixty years and a woman named Schneider of about Fifty, for criminal intimacy.  Suspicion has for some time been directed toward the couple, and last night Mr. Keene and the police stood watch outside the house, and were rewarded about eleven o'clock by positive proof that suspicion had been in the right direction.  Mr. Keene, with his usual promptness , raised the window, jumped in and arrested the pair.  Police Judge Bailey was aroused, and an examination had, which resulted in a nine of five dollars and costs upon each of the prisoners.  Mrs. Schneider paid her fine, but the Doctor could not pay his, and will be put to work upon the streets."

East Atchison must have been a real exciting place to live.   The following was found in the Atchison Globe, Oct 10, 1881.  "All of the saloons in East Atchison, with one exception were closed yesterday.  An effort to close this one resulted in a fight during which the police judge received slight injuries.  The proprietor of this place will probably be before the police court in the morning. "

ALSO

"Charles Harris drew a pistol on Columbus Keene in a fowler street saloon last night, but Bryant Lanier, who was standing by, stepped between them and prevented a fight."

ALSO

" William Funderberg, who knocked an eye out of Matt Yocum during a saloon row in East Atchison Yesterday morning, will have an examination before Justice Prosser next Thursday.  He is now in jail at St Joe."

Found in the Atchison Globe Feb 12, 1889 " Columbus Keene ought to be distributing free fish to his customers, a pair of twin girls arrived at his house last Sunday."
