Memories of Kirkman, Iowa

The center of our grandparents' universe lives on in the village of Kirkman.

For our ancestors who were born and grew up in Iowa, Kirkman was their social, religious, and commercial hub.  It was long the terminus of a railroad, a busy transportation center.

Although a Google search on "Kirkman Iowa" yields a lot of Internet trash, you will also find a number of interesting backgrounders on the history of the village, so we'll not duplicate that information here...

A proud history

"92 people, 4 dogs, 13 cats" may be a tad exaggerated

Our Grandmother, Sylvia Lacey Barber, never forgot her childhood memories of Kirkman and the surrounding area.  For all her life, she longed to return to those gentle rolling hills and valley vistas -- and memories of life in Kirkman.

Geography, technology, and politics dealt Kirkman the same cruel blows as many other once-booming villages experienced, but it remains a center of social and religious activities and community pride.  The church is well attended, there's a thriving community center, a modern fire department with four certified EMT's, a post office, and... Nub and Pat's bar and grill.  Well-trimmed lawns line quiet streets.  Genteel life continues.

The Kirkman Alumni Association welcomes all interested persons, whether you lived in or attended school in Kirkman or not;  recent memorial ceremonies commemorated both school systems which once existed here; and efforts are under way to establish a "mini-museum" with historic artifacts of significance to Kirkman.  Contributions and donations much appreciated.  (Contact your Webmaster for more information.)
