Career Research
Project
Planning for your future can be an exciting
and confusing experience. Right
now, you are living in a time that you
may not know what types of careers
there will be by the time you graduate
from college... or even high school.
It is said that you will have between 8-12
jobs during your lifetime. This
project will assist you in exploring your
options and possibilities as
you begin to think about what you want
to do with YOUR future.
What's important to YOU? What's it going
to be?
You're the only one who can decide YOUR
future.
BECOMING A SUCCESS (as YOU define it) DEPENDS
ON CHOOSING THE CAREER THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU!
Have fun exploring your options!
In this project, you will be exploring
careers that are of interest to you.
You will need to:
1. Log onto www.careercruising.com. For
username, enter “pshs.” For password, enter “careers.” ---Choose : Create a Portfolio so you have
a place to keep your folders and can access them from home. Follow the prompts and remember the login that
you choose.2. After logging on, choose “Start a Career Matchmaking-Session,” & take the survey to generate
a list of careers that you might enjoy.
3.
Choose a career to investigate. Use
the Careercruising website to explore educational/training requirements, job outlook, working conditions, pay, challenges,
rewards, etc.
4. Take Cornell Notes as you research. You must turn in a notes
page to get credit.
5. Write a 5 paragraph paper in which you follow this guideline:
Paragraph
1: Introduce your chosen career & explain why you chose it. Discuss the results of the personality/career quiz you took
online.
Paragraph 2: Identify the preparation
& skills needed for your particular career. What kind of degree/ education will you need? What technical/ technological
skills will be required? Basically, what do you need to know to do that job?
Paragraph 3: Imagine what a typical workday would be like. What would your working hours
be? In what kind of environment would you be working? Would you work alone or in a group? Describe some of your responsibilities.
Paragraph 4: Describe the rewards (both monetary &
personal) that could result from choosing this career. How might you impact the lives of others? How would your life be different
than it is now if you chose this career? Describe the consequences as well. What might be the downside of this job? You might
think about money, location, time spent with family & friends, etc.
Paragraph 5: After researching, would you choose this career for yourself? If you would,
in what specific aspects of the job are you interested? If you would not, what specific aspects of the job do not appeal to
you? Do you think the quiz was successful in matching your personality & interests to a career? What are the most important
factors for you when considering careers? Finally, did this project introduce you to new options for your future?
6. Submit a typed resume for your chosen career. It should
be in the proper format, & include all necessary detail. Write it as your real self, but think of what skills you would
need to highlight.
7. Type a letter (in business letter
format) that a person with your career might need to write. To whom will it be addressed? What will be the subject?
There are FOUR
different parts to this assignment that must be turned in.
1. Cornell Notes reflecting the research that you did for your career.
2. The 5-paragraph paper, following the format outlined in #5 above.
3. A typed resume that you would submit if you were applying for that particular job.
4. A typed business letter that contains appropriate subject matter/language for your chosen career.
