"The Monster Maker"
- 1944 (PRC) Producers Releasing Corporation
When phony doctor J. Carroll Naish is spurned by Wanda McKay he turns on her father, Ralph Morgan.
With the help of a strongman Glenn Strange he injects the pianist dad with acromegaly germs, turning him into an
ugly - faced "monster."
Perhaps PRC's horror star in residence George Zucco was off working elsewhere, as J. Carrol Naish takes over the
horror-man spot in Monster Maker. J. Carrol Naish, the twice Oscar-nominated character actor (for Sahara, 1943, and A Medal
for Benny, 1945), was signed on February 3, 1944, to play the title role in PRC's newest horror opus, which went into production
under the title The Devil's Apprentice four days later.

The ugliness of the film struck the Phantom of the Movies (The Phantom's Ultimate Video Guide) just
right: "An authentically creepy flick....Pretty sick for its time." William K. Everson wrote that Monster Maker "was definitely
a cut above the average, perhapes due, to better actors than usual and some novelty values in the script."
Director: Sam Newfield
CAST: J. Carroll Nash, Ralph Morgan, Wanda McKay, Sam Flint, and Glen Strange.
