The Church seasons

Season How it is determined
Advent The beginning of the church year, four Sundays prior to Christmas Day
Christmas December 25 through January 5 (twelve days)
Epiphany January 6 through Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday)
Lent The forty days (excluding Sundays) prior to Easter
(Holy Week) The last seven days of Lent, from Palm Sunday to the Great Vigil on Saturday.
Easter Easter Sunday (earliest is March 22; latest is April 25) and the 50 days thereafter
Pentecost (Trinity) From the Day of Pentecost * (formerly called "Whitsunday") and for at least 22 but not more than 27 Sundays thereafter

The Church calendar is based upon Easter Sunday, which is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal (spring) equinox. The "movable feasts" are: Easter, Septuagesima Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Ascension Day, Pentecost, and Advent Sunday.

* For the Day of Pentecost itself, the ecclesiastical color is RED.
