Dave Rapp's gardenThroughout the spring, summer, and fall of 2009, parishioners from Emmanuel gathered at the home of long-time members David and Jeanne Rapp, tending to the family's vegetable garden, as a way to raise funds for the Blue Ridge Food Bank. Meneta Deaton took the lead in recruiting church members to help out, and created a blog to keep a record of the activities: Dave's garden stories.

Bishop Light visits EmmanuelOn Sunday, May 17, the Right Reverend A. Heath Light, fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, paid a visit to Emmanuel on the occasion of the baptism of Margaret Lupton Cox and the reception of Robin Boylan into the Episcopal Church. After the eucharistic service was concluded, the congregation gathered in Memorial Hall for a reception in honor of the bishop.

PAX rummage sale: another big successOn Saturday April 25, the PAX youth group held its first-ever "Radically Ridiculous Rummage Sale," and fair weather helped boost patronage. They met their goal of raising $1000 for the "Raise the Roof" campaign, and presented a ceremonial check to the Rev. Ed Covert at the 11:00 service the next day.

Palm Sunday 2009As in years past, members of Emmanuel Episcopal Church joined with other local congregations in a Palm Sunday procession through the streets of downtown Staunton. This year's observance of Holy Week -- memorializing the arrival of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, the Last Supper, his betrayal, crucifixion, and resurrection -- was blessed with mild, sunny conditions. We began at Trinity Episcopal church, marched down Beverley Street, and concluded with songs and prayers at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic church, before returning to our respective churches.
New roof is finishedThe work crews have completed installation of the new copper roof on our church, thus assuring that the building will remain in good condition for many years to come.
Emmanuel Night OutThe "Emmanuel Night Out" talent show drew an overflow crowd into Memorial Hall on Saturday evening, helping to achieve the fund-raising goal of the "Raise the Roof" campaign. Performers of all ages and levels of musical training (mostly from within our congregation) joined in the fun. Allan Hadfield began and ended the program with his fine bagpipe playing, and our organist and musical director Sarah Grove-Humphries performed various songs, and also accompanied the women's vocal ensemble which she leads, Lyrisa. Several children who study music under Sarah sang or played piano, as well, and one of them played violin. Between some of the performances, Katherine Turner read some amusing lines of British children's poetry. Near the end of the evening, Senior Warden Robin Boylan announced that enough money had been raised to pay for the new church roof, recognizing Judge Harrison May for his generosity. Many thanks to Randy Hamblett and Sarah Grove-Humphries for coordinating this wonderful and very successful event. Many more photos can be seen at Meneta Deaton's Web photo album.

Shrove Tuesday pancake supperSeveral dozen Emmanuel parishioners gathered to enjoy a hearty Shrove Tuesday pancake supper on February 24, preparing for the Lenten season of fasting and penitence. Once again, the PAX youth group did a wonderful job in setting up, cooking, and cleaning.
Larry and Tidge Roller donned appropriate Mardi Gras attire for the occasion. Additional photos have been posted on Meneta Deaton's photo gallery. PAX makes donation to SACRADuring the main service on February 8, members of the PAX youth group presented a check for one thousand dollars to SACRA, the local community relief organization. This was the fruition of their very successful fund-raising activities over the past few months. After the service, PAX held a "soup cookoff" event as part of the "second Sunday soup" luncheon, awarding a golden ladle to the winner. We are all blessed to have such fine, devoted younger members of our parish.
