Mid-Atlantic Spring Regatta
at
West River Sailing Club April 25 & 26, 2009
The West River Sailing Club in Galesville will host the Mid-Atlantic Spring Regatta for the A-Class Catamaran between April 25 & 26.
The A-Class Catamaran is a single handed catamaran, 18' long by 7'6" wide. It weighs
only 165 lbs! It has a sail area of 150 sq feet including the mast. Sailors go upwind on the trapeze as fast
as 14 knots, they fly a hull in 8-10 knots and by 12 knots they are “wild-thinging” downwind at speeds up to 22
knots.
A-Cats are built by high-tech manufacturers around the world. Usually built of carbon fibre,
they are the pinnacle of high tech dinghies. Builders in Australia,
Italy, Sweden, Germany and the U.S.
build these light-weight flyers. One club member at WRSC has also built his own
boat to a design by Dirk Kramers, a lead engineer with the Alinghi America’s Cup team.
This event is very important for the competitors. The highest finisher will
secure a position in the 2007 World championships to be held in Florida
in November 2007.
The A-Class fleet is only 5 years old at WRSC, but it already boasts 18 boats and a very active
schedule. This regatta is headed up by former America’s Cup sailor Tony Arends of Racer X Sails and former All-American
sailor, Mark Bellerman.
We expect sailors from the Mid-Atlantic area including a
strong contingent from Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey
Come on down to Galesville
and check out all the activity.
