Home Brewed Beer

by Glenn Gearhard

This home brewed beer contains only malt, hops, water, and yeast. It should have a freshness and full body that is unlike any mass produced beer that you can buy in the store.

Always store your home brew beer right-side up. Because it is made from only the 4 basic ingredients, it will have a small amount of sediment on the bottom of the bottle. This is normal for home brew beer. The sediment is a fine layer of dead yeast cells, and it reminds us that this is indeed a fresh home brew beer. The major breweries employ some "chemistry" so that their beer doesn't have this sediment in the bottle. The sediment is a proud advertisement that this beer uses only the four basic ingredients and no chemistry.

Once you chill this home brew and you are ready to sample it, get a nice glass, and slowly and smoothly pour the beer in one continuous motion. The sediment will remain on the bottom of the bottle. Pour all of the beer into the glass except the last smidgen (that's an exact measurement). The yeast sediment will not hurt you. It would only add a cloudy appearance to your glass and maybe (maybe not) a slight yeasty taste to your home brew sample. If you inadvertently pour some in your glass, then relax. Raise the glass to your lips and I hope you enjoy this sample.

If you rinse out the bottle immediately, the sediment will come out easily. If you are close enough to return the empty bottle to me, you may be rewarded with a small dividend (like a taste of my next batch).

I am interested in all comments (positive and negative) so that I can make my next batch of beer even better.
