Pirate No-Hitters

Last Updated 13 July 1997
Information is from the 1995 Record and Information Guide (Media Guide)

September 20, 1907:
Nicholas Maddox vs Brooklyn at Pittsburgh; score 2-1. Maddox was a rookie.

May 6, 1951:
Clifford D. Chambers at Boston; score 3-0.

*May 26, 1959:
Harvey Haddix at Milwaukee; score 0-1. Haddix pitched 12 perfect no-hit, no-run innings, giving up one hit and losing in the 13th inning.

September 20, 1969:
Bob Moose at New York; score 4-0. Moose and I are from the same hometown.

June 12, 1970:
Dock Ellis at San Diego; score 2-0.

August 9, 1976:
John Candelaria vs Los Angeles at Pittsburgh; score 2-0.

July 12, 1997:
Francisco Cordova/Ricardo Rincon vs Houston at Pittsburgh; score 3-0, 10 innings.
Cordova pitched 9 innings of no-hit ball (10 K's, 2 BBs) and Rincon garnered the win with a no-hit inning of relief. Pirate pinch hitter Mark Smith hit a 3-run Home run with 2-out in the 10th. A sell-out crowd (44,119) had gathered for a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut in the majors as well as a usually popular post-game fireworks show. The win inched the Pirates back into a tie for first place with the Astros.

There was never a no-hitter thrown by either a Pirate or visiting pitcher at Forbes Field during its 60-year history.
*Note: MLB announced in 1991 that a no-hit game is "one in which a pitcher - or pitchers - completes a game of nine innings or more without allowing a hit." All other games, such as Haddix' are "notable achievements and will be listed separately."
