| Emily Adler - Founder, Atlanta Recorder Society |
Emily (Mila) Wilk Adler died on January 24,
2010, at her daughter’s home in Jasper, Georgia, at the age
of 103. Mrs. Adler was born in Hamburg, Germany, on August 30, 1906, and came to the United States in 1926.
She married Hans Adler in Chicago in 1929 and they had
two daughters. Both Mr. and Mrs. Adler had learned to play recorders in school and became active members of the Chicago chapter of the American Recorder Society. After her husband died
in 1975, Mrs. Adler moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to be near one
of her daughters. She found recorder players and started a weekly playing group. In the early 1980s she took the
lead to organize the Atlanta Recorder Society and was its president for several years. She organized workshops, arranged a memorable trip to
Austria for a workshop with Hans Ulrich Staeps (1984), and encouraged many to take up the instrument through
her teaching and example. Emily’s Consort, a group for senior citizens, still continues. The last five years
of her life were in Jasper, where her daughter and son-in-law had moved, but she continued to have visitors (with recorders
in hand) to play with her and for her. She will be sorely missed by the larger recorder community as well as by
many others whose lives she touched.
