Ashley was celebrating her 16th birthday with a butterfly theme. I thought this would fit the bill since Ashley is such an "angel" herself. I gave the angel Ashley's colouring to personalize it for her. The inspiration for the angel design comes from a line of inedible ornaments called "Kneeded Angels" by Carol Graziano. Mine is not an exact copy of her work but close enough that I wanted to make sure to pass along the design credit! The entire cake is handmade and edible using buttercream frosting, Chocopan fondant (flowers and leaves), Pettinice (angel robe), gumpaste (lettering, angel face, hands, wings, butterflies), and an ice cream cone as an edible former for the angel! It didn't show up in the photos very well but the robe is embossed with a butterfly design as well. This was my first attempt at modelling by hand a "human" face. I was so thrilled that this all pulled together as I'd been at such a loss as to what to do. My prayers were certainly answered on this one.

Please excuse the "rumpled" cloth background in these pictures! I took the photos on the table as usual and on checking the photos realized that with the dark wooden background I totally lost the definition of the angels hair. As a consequence I had to rustle around and find the only light background I could find (a clean but crumpled sheet!). I had no time for ironing - it was 6:00 pm and the cake had to be delivered at 6:30 pm and was a 30 minute drive away! I'm sure a lot of you can relate to that sort of situation! :) Hope you like it anyway!
