| I made this cake for two reasons. One to celebrate my father-in-law's 70th birthday, and secondly to celebrate his and my mother-in-law's 48th wedding anniversary (hence the corresponding initials on the bottle collars and the numbers on the labels). Since both dates had passed (due to them being out of town at the time)I thought a joint celebration cake would be in order, and that this idea might tie the themes together quite nicely. All the decorations are handmade from gumpaste. This was my first attempt at making gumpaste lettering (quite the challenge!). I used the bottle and glass set of the Patchwork Cutters for the topper and the smaller bottles, and used the FMM Celebration cutters for the fluted champagne glasses on the side. I got the idea for the side designs from a cake that Nicholas Lodge has on display in his store. The top was my own creation. You may not be able to even notice it, but the champagne bubbles coming out of the glass tops are made from tinted piping gel. I hope you like it! |
