| I designed this cake especially for Michael who was having a "Tools for Life" birthday. I remembered seeing a similarly designed cake somewhere on my internet travels. I was challenged as to how to get the sides to stand up and be comparatively smooth and yet textured like wood while still being edible. I came up with this solution - gingerbread! The cake itself is actually "hidden" under the bottom of the box. It was a 9" x 13" devils food cake with chocolate frosting. The tools are all handcast in chocolate using silver luster dust to give the chrome look for the appropriate parts. The nuts, bolts, and screws were also made from chocolate, but those I actually made the mold for myself using the Australian product "Create-A-Mold". The only inedible in the whole thing is the dowel rod carrying handle. That I just painted with clear vanilla extract mixed with brown paste colour to give it a nice aroma and colour! This one was a lot of fun to do and I was thrilled when Michael reported that he told a friend to look at his cake in the kitchen, and the friend couldn't spot it, but thought he had a nice new tool box! Happy Birthday, Michael! |
