On July 15, 1933, one-eyed Wiley Post took off from Floyd Bennett Field in his Lockheed Vega airplane, the Winnie Mae, to become the first pilot to fly solo around the world. Traveling 15,957 miles, Post set his plane down on the same spot he had taken off from 7 days, 18 hours and 49 minutes later. This photograph shows Post posing with his plane a month before the historic flight next to Hangar #7. |
