June 1931---Otto Hillig, a German, with pilot Holger Horiis, a Dane, teamed up to attempt the long transatlantic trip to their homelands in a Bellanca named “Liberty” after the town in New York State where Hillig lived. They endured a grueling 32 hour flight through fog and turbulence but eventually landed in a field near Krefeld, Germany. The next day they flew on to Copenhagen for a welcome home for Horiis. The airplane is seen here at Floyd Bennett Field being prepared for the long trip. |
