Attempting to cross the Atlantic, Stanislaus Hausner in his Bellanca “St. Rosa Maria” took off from Floyd Bennett Field on June 3, 1932. Halfway across the ocean Hausner saw that his fuel was leaking. He scouted the shipping lanes for a passing ship but saw none and eventually had to ditch the aircraft in the ocean. The Bellanca floated well and Hausner survived for 8 days on top of the plane before being rescued by a passing British tanker. The Bellanca is seen here outside Hangar #4 at Floyd Bennett Field before the unsuccessful flight. |
