On June 22, 1935, two Portuguese brothers, Alfred and George Monteverde, attempted to take off from Floyd Bennett Field in an over-loaded Bellanca they named “Francisco de Pinedo” in honor of their fallen Italian colleague. Unfortunately, the plane met the same fate as its namesake, failing to lift off with its heavy load of fuel. It rolled into a sandpile at the end of the runway and the brothers walked away from the crash with only minor injuries. |
