Leon Pisciuli, M.D., recruited a young nurse, Edna Newcomer, and pilot William Ulrich to assist him in observing the effects of extended flight on human beings.  In his Bellanca, “American Nurse”, they took off from Floyd Bennett Field on September 13, 1932, determined to cross the Atlantic and beyond.  The aircraft was spotted en route by an ocean liner but then disappeared without a trace.  The doomed crew is seen here at Floyd Bennett Field just before the ill-fated flight.
