I am a widely experienced journalist and public affairs professional, with extensive experience in management and team building, writing and editing, proofreading, page design, speechwriting and public speaking. Editorial Director 1993-1997
Oversaw staff of five and all aspects pertaining to editorial and production of national news feature placement service to 10,000 newspapers, 400 Hispanic publications, 6,000 radio stations, 1,000 television stations. Responsibilities included creating and monitoring budgets; daily oversight of editorial and production departments, including assigning and editing articles and graphics; annual employee evaluations; daily contact with clients, typesetters and press.
 
o Created a high-quality editorial operation on a limited budget, including a full-time and freelance staff, standard operating procedures for implementing contracts, and advanced the print publication from monthly to biweekly.
 
o Implemented standard operating procedures for fulfillment of television contracts.
 
o Played key role in company achieving more than 50 percent annual growth from 1993 to 1996.
 
The Connection Newspapers, Reston, VA
Managing Editor 1992-1993
Oversaw all operations pertaining to editorial and production of seven Northern Virginia community weekly newspapers ranging in size from 40-120 pages each. Responsibilities included managing 22-person staff of editors, reporters and photographers, hiring, counseling, evaluations; direct editing and design of two of the newspapers in the group.
 
o Presided over successful conversion to pagination and redesign of the newspapers.
 
o Interviewed and hired most of newsroom staff, strengthened reporting and editing skills of staff; located and enlisted stable of talented freelancers.
 
o Initiated new columns and features.
 
o Stabilized newsroom during major changes in production modes and locations.
 
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission.
Public Affairs Director 1991-1992
Responsible for developing and carrying out communication strategies for promoting the objectives of the Commission; writing and editing Commission publications, news releases, letters and speeches for Chairperson Coretta Scott King; coordinating all media relations, arranging interviews and coverage of Commission activities.
 
o Rewrote and redesigned all Commission literature
 
o Compiled mailing/FAX lists for media, religious and other organizations, and created system for responding to requests for information and literature.
 
o Created publicity campaign to establish international tradition of King Holiday bell ringing, beginning at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia (obtained endorsements and help from major religious councils.
 
o Orchestrated network TV public service announcement campaign in concert with the Advertising Council.
 
o Gave radio and newspaper interviews and speeches at Holiday events.
 
The Washington Times, Washington, D.C.
Special Projects Editor 1986-1991
Responsible for conception, design, editing and production oversight of some 25 regularly occurring special sections per year. Initiated and coordinated special projects and events (public forums, anniversary sections, Newspaper in Education programs, etc.).
 
o Created nationally recognized, award-winning King Day section, recruiting essayists such as President George Bush, Sec. Jack Kemp, Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, Coretta Scott King, Bo Jackson and dozens of others.
 
o Established interdepartmental lines of communication that improved marketability of special sections.
 
o Instituted public forums on premises featuring expert panelists and concerned citizens.
 
o Coordinated editorial, advertising and circulation departments on each special project, creating lines of communication that increased revenues.
 
Daily Magazine Editor 1985-1986
Responsible for five feature magazines per week (Books, Fashion, Food,  Arts and City), overseeing sub-editors, assigning staff of ten, editing wire copy, syndicated columns; creating and monitoring budget.
 
o Redesign and reformatting of magazine, including redefining daily themes, hiring new columnists, etc.
