For me, such a list begins with wordsmithing and playing music. I began my journalism career in 1982 with The Washington Times
in Washington, D.C. Since then I've tried my hand at being a managing editor of several news organizations, and a public affairs
director. It took me a while to remember that what I really got into the business to do was to write -- essays, short stories,
novels.
