Elections Integrity
 
The retreat will focus on the integrity of our elections process at the state and federal level.  The history of recent problems with state and federal elections, efforts to address these problems, and recent and pending legislation will be reviewed.

Note that participants who wish to see Hacking Democracy can do so on either Friday or Saturday night.  The video is being shown twice to allow participants some flexibility in their schedules.

*Arrangements will be made for a group dinner at a local restaurant for those who wish to participate.
**Check-out time for individual vacation cabins is 10:00 AM.
 
Registration
 
$30 nonrefundable registration fee is due April 20.  It includes:
  • Continental breakfast on Saturday 
  • Picnic lunch on Saturday
  • Brunch on Sunday
  • A copy of Steal This Vote 
  • Copies of all handouts

Extra goodies - A limited number of Hacking Democracy DVDs will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and a one-day ticket to Democracyfest will be awarded to one participant in a fair and honest, paper-based raffle.  This year's Democracyfest will include a first-ever session on elections integrity, sponsored by Democracy for New Hampshire. The one-day ticket, valued at $60, may be used as is or applied toward the purchase of a $155 full-event pass.

Registration is limited to 15 people.  Payment may be made via PayPal or by check. To register for the retreat, simply email the organizer and let them know that you would like to attend.  They will provide you with a registration form and payment instructions. 

Location and Transportation
 
The retreat will be held in the Hill Lodge at Twin Lakes State Park, located off of US 360 about 45 miles southwest of Richmond.
 
Twin Lakes is easy to reach by car from Charlottesville, Danville, Lynchburg, and Richmond, and from the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.
 
Amtrak provides convenient train service from to Richmond from Baltimore and from Union Station in Washington.
 
Richmond International Airport is served by AirTrans, American, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, Northwest, US Airways, and United Airlines. AirTrans offers direct flights to Richmond from Atlanta; JetBlue offers direct flights from JFK Airport in New York.
 
Let the organizer know if you need directions to Twin Lakes or transportation to the retreat from the airport or Amtrak station in Richmond.
 
Lodging
 
Hill Lodge has four bedrooms, each with two twin beds.  These rooms will be available to participants on a first-come, first-served basis for $45 per room for either Friday or Saturday night or $80 per room for both Friday and Saturday nights.  Information on reserving a room at Hill Lodge will be included with the instructions for registration.  If you are interested in sharing a room with someone, let the organizer know your preferences.
 
If you want to stay at Hill Lodge, please reserve early.   Hill Lodge reservations are fully refundable through April 20.
 
Twin Lakes also has a limited number of two-bedroom vacation cabins available for $87-106 per night, plus camping facilities. There are also a few budget motels (Comfort Inn, Days Inn, Super 8) and one nice B&B within a 30-minute drive of the park.
 
Participants who wish to stay at a facility other than Hill Lodge are asked make their own lodging arrangements.  If you are not familiar with the area and are not planning to stay at Hill Lodge, the organizer can provide you with a list of other lodging choices nearby.
 
Families
 
Participants are welcome to bring their families with them to Twin Lakes.  Although no swimming is allowed at Twin Lakes prior to Memorial Day, canoes and rowboats are available for rent and hiking trails are open. Fishing is permitted with a valid Virginia fishing license.  Nearby attractions include Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park, Lee’s Retreat Driving Tour, Prince Edward/Gallion State Forest, the Longwood College Visual Arts Center with a special Kids Activity Room, and the charming Crewe Historic Railroad ParkFarmville, which is about a 30-minute drive away, offers more shopping than one might expect of a small town.
 
Family members are welcome to join the group for meals and to watch Hacking Democracy with us on Friday or Saturday night. Families are asked to make their own lodging arrangements.
