BUNNY LOOPS
By James Parsons

I’ve never learned to tie my shoe
the way that other people do
with one end looped and one end snaked
around the other loopy lace
and then a sort of tucking motion
to which most folks express devotion

It’s not that I’ve got velcro straps
or boots with zippered buckled snaps
I just prefer two bunny loops
and so might you, so here’s the scoop:

Take your left lace in your left hand and
your right lace in your right
Put left over right or right over left
(whichever way for you works best)
Flip the end that went on top
under the other and pull it taught
That’s the same as everyone does
so I hope that you’re not all confuzzed

Now you have the right hand lace
in your left hand held in place
and the left hand lace is right
in your right hand held down tight
So with each hand you fold each end
over once, a single bend
When you’ve made these dual flips
make sure there’s some lace at the tips
to dangle loose, enough to pull
the knots apart when you are through
Here comes the really beauty part
you do the end just like the start
Criss-cross the loops just like you crossed
the ends before -- you can’t get lost --
unlike with other techniques
which always leave me feeling weak.
One loop looped around the other
and you never have to bother
with which end should have gone ‘round first
or which side is the best or worst
for tucking or looping or whatever
which always takes me near forever.

Oh, I almost didn’t mention
my favorite part of my invention
Since you have two loops, not one
there’s this little bit more fun
Make your shoe hop when you grab it
as if you’d caught yourself a rabbit.
