Summerwings 2008
The crew of Summerwings is once again in the Sea of Cortez for the 2008/2009 winter cruising season.

January 23, 2009

So here's the trick of being able to catch a 25 lb. Dorado by hand.  We had been walking along the beach at Isla San Francisco with Bev & Den from s/v Allure when Kim noticed a large fish in the shallows.  Den thought it was a small shark but, on closer inspection, Kim ID'd it as a Dorado.  As I was the only one with water shoes on, Kim suggested I step into the shallows to for a closer look.  As I waded in I was able to see that the fish had been hooked and had line scars on its side.  When I reached down to touch it I fully expected the fish to dart away but it didn't. So I reached down, grabbed it by the tail and carried it up onto the beach.  Den then scurried back to his boat for fileting tools and, within two hours, we were munching on fish tacos.

So the trick is to have someone else hook and fight the fish to within a inch of its life.  We think it came into the shallows to recover or die but was unfortunate enough to do so in our presence.

We are currently in La Paz waiting to have our watermaker repaired.  In addition we've been doing a number of other tasks and are hoping to leave next week for a few weeks in the islands before our friends Bob & Jane visit.

YES, I really caught it with my BARE hands

Here's the Mahi Mahi Ken caught with his BARE HANDS.  Details to follow in a few days.

January 3, 2009 Update

A Buen Nuevo Ano to all!

The "Foot" is healing nicely with no additional surgery necessary.  Kim is currently spending a couple of days in San Jose Del Cabo (at the Hilton no less) visiting with her friend Cindee.  We had a quiet New Year's Eve with the exception of Dale getting a little freaked by the fireworks.

We plan to leave La Paz next week for another trip to the islands after which we will return to La Paz, reprovision, and head far north into the Sea for several months.  Updates may be few and far between during that time but we'll try to stay in touch.

Best wishes to all,

Ken, Kim, and Dalefurd

The Morning Shore Run

We left La Paz for the islands on December 17th and stayed at El Cardoncito for a night and then headed to Isla San Francisco to hang out for 4 days to wait out a norther.  Days consisted of relaxing, hiking, and building a new bridle for anchoring the boat.  First thing each morning Ken would head to the beach to give Dale a bathroom break while Kim prepped breakfast.  We also spent each evening dining with new friends from New Zealand aboard s/v Kaumoana.

After Isla San Francisco we headed to Caleta Partida to spend a few nights.  Unfortunately, as we dragged the dinghy through the shallows, Kim forgot to do the Stingray shuffle and got hit in the foot.  Although it appeared to be a small wound we elected to return to La Paz so that medical treatment could be sought if needed.

After several days in La Paz it appeared that Kim's wound was healing so we headed out again and ended up at San Evaristo.

In San Evaristo the usual level of activites occurred and Dale even met a friend who would come running over every time we headed into the beach.

After several days it appeared that Kim's wound had, in fact become infected so, with 20 knot winds and 4 to 6 foot swells, we headed south directly to La Paz.

The trip to La Paz was fairly quick, with the winds we averaged about 7 knots and even hit 9.5 knots at one point.

We took Kim to the Doctor and he gave her a shot of antibiotocs, painkiller, and an antiinflammatory as well as a prescription for Cipro.  In total the visit and precriptions cost 975 pesos, approximately $80 USD.  If it doesn't look better by X-Mas eve we'll return and the Doctor will excise the wound.  Either way, she'll be fine, will just have to endure a little pain.  We'll update everyone as soon as we know what's going on.

December 14, 2008 Update

We have finally returned to cruise the Sea of Cortez.  We drove down the Baja to La Paz, arriving around the middle of November 2008.  As the drive was quite long and Mexican driver's licenses are flexible, we let Dale handle some of the driving.

After dealing with a number of boat issues we set sail north and ended up sitting out a northerly wind storm at Isla San Franciso.  A great beach and good hiking as shown in the attached photos.
