Well discuss prewriting strategies, organization, grammar, and focus, with an eye toward both correct and unique presentations of writing. The theme for this class is education and literacy particularly, how you education is impacted by things such as culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender, etc. Our readings will provide material for class discussions and will be the basis of three formal essays: an education narration, a persuasive letter to an authority in education, and an analysis of an argument Texts and Supplies: Nickeled and Dimed, Ehrenreich SF Compact $$$ for photocopying review drafts a reliable method of saving your work (floppy disk, jump drive, etc.) a writing notebook and college dictionary a folder to hold drafts of each essay Classroom Policies: You are allowed three absences for the quarter. Upon the third absence, your final grade drops by one letter. After five absences, you cannot pass the course. This isnt a lecture course, and your attendance is very important to both your own success, and the ultimate success of the course. You are expected to come prepared to participate meaningfully in class discussion. I reserve the right to mark you absent for coming unprepared, sleeping during class, checking email during class, or any other disruptions. If you do miss a class, you are responsible for getting any work to me on time, and for making up any missed work. You should arrive at the next class with makeup work in hand. Late work will be accepted only with my prior consent or proper documentation. Three tardies (or three times leaving late) equal an absence from class. Being tardy (arriving after Ive started class) is usually disruptive, and so is to be avoided. If at any time you attend less than half a class, youll be counted absent. Computer excuses of any kind are unacceptable. This includes hard-drive crashes, printer jams, email mishaps, and disk betrayals. Dont wait to the last minute to try posting something. Keep back-up copies. Email papers to yourself. Store your work in your freezer. This is your writing, so protect it. All out-of-class writing must be typed according to the essay guidelines below. Please turn off phones, pagers, and any other noisemakers for class. Course content includes adult material. We may view excerpts from R-rated movies, discuss controversial topics, or read literature containing profanity or adult situations. If you suspect any of this could be a problem for you, please talk to me immediately. Courtesy is important both in class and on discussion boards. Remember that this is a public forum. Play nicely. Should you encounter any difficulties with the course material, the method of instruction, or the instructor, please contact the instructor, the campus Ombudsperson, your advisor, or the Associate Dean. The Office for Disability Services (Marge Hazelett, MR 297, ext. 6247) offers services for students with documented disabilities. Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately to discuss your specific needs. Course Requirements: Summaries and Responses: 1 page, typed responses to assigned readings. Graded on your ability to synthesize a large quantity of information and present it in a clear, concise form. Also graded on originality of thought, technical competency, and organization. Formal Essays: Essay #1 is a narrative, or story. Narratives recount a meaningful experience and analyze its significance. They have a beginning, middle, and end. They include characters, plot, dialogue, and setting. Your assignment for this essay is to write the story of an event that has some special meaning in your life. Write about a specific time when something significant happened. Provide details that create a scene: at least one person in a setting where something happens. Allow readers to experience the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings that you did. Essay #2 is an analysis. Analyses are part explanatory, part evaluative. They explain a text, then make assertions about its meanings. They include as many of the texts original points as possible, but also your own opinions about the success or failure of the text. Your assignment will be to write an analysis of the book, Nickel and Dimed. Your analysis should explain what concept(s) you will focus on, and then give your overall evaluation of the book, providing evidence from the text to support your claims. Proposal for Essay #3 should clearly state the following: 1) your audience, 2) your specific topic, 3) what knowledge you already have (from experience, from prior education, from readings weve done in class) that will allow you to explore this topic effectively, 4) knowledge you need to gather in order to better understand your topic and where you think youll be able to find that knowledge 5) two possible theses for your essay. Essay #3 is a persuasive essay. Persuasive writing is when you take a position on an issue and defend that position to potential allies and opponents. It is not just an argument where there are two clear sides; often, there are many more sides to a problem, each related to ones perspective. Persuasive writing seeks to reveal the truth about an issue in all its complexity, and to get readers to think about the issue in a new way. Since persuasive writing also demands that you provide evidence to back up your claims, you are required to use two outside, academic sources. Write to a person who has the power to affect some policy, and make your own argument relating to employment. Participation: Peer Response: You will be providing written and oral comments on your classmates drafts. Absence from peer group counts as absences from class. Comments should be specific and content-based. Offer constructive criticism of the kind youd like to receive. Readings: Reading assignments are due on the day they are listed, and should be completed before coming to class. All are important, so dont skip them you may be counted absent if you do. Quizzes will reinforce this, and many of your paper topics will relate to the readings. Use active reading strategies to understand and question the texts (active reading is defined in the texts appendix), and be prepared to discuss them. In-Class: Students are expected to verbally participate in classroom discussions. To get credit, you must participate everyday in a respectful manner. Disruption of class, including sleeping, checking email or surfing the web during discussions, inappropriate comments, etc. is not tolerated. If you need to bring coffee or soda to class to stay awake, bring it I know I will. If you need to check your email, do it before or after class. Upon the first instance of disruptive behavior, Ill give you a warning. The next time, youll be counted absent or asked to leave. Writers Journal: Informal writing on a daily basis, both in class and out of class, graded on completion and thoughtfulness. May be handwritten, but must be legible. The journal will be collected at the end of each unit. Grammar Presentation: In pairs, you will be assigned one particular grammar issue to present to the class. Your job is to research the rules regarding this issue, present these rules to the class with examples (your own examples dont plagiarize!), and develop a short quiz for the class. You will be graded on the effectiveness and thoroughness of your presentation, as well as on how well the class does on your quiz. Your presentation should be between 10 and 15 minutes. Evaluation: Your final grade in English 109.01 will consist of the following elements: Essays 55% Essay 1 10% Essay 2 15% Proposal for Essay 3 10% Essay 3 20% Summaries and Responses 15% In-Class Participation 10% Peer Group 10% Writers Journal 10% Grammar Presentation 5% Essay Information: Plagiarism is the unauthorized use of the words or ideas of another person, and is a serious academic offense.
