KP's battery-powered Disneyland fan was accidently dropped into the pond behind the Tong Mao Hotel. We managed to convince the gardener to use his net to retrieve it for us the next morning. Not only did it still whirl, but KP was delighted to find that communication didn't require an understanding of either Chinese or English . . . simple hand gestures and smiles would do!

We toured Shanghai with other attendees of the Chinese-American Frontiers in Science program. KP loved the bus "antennae", i.e. the rearview mirrors. Shanghai is a blend of old and new, and home to 17 million people!
