Congratulations to the AZ DEC Mini-Grant winners

for 2011-2012!

In the fall of 2011, AZ DEC increased the size of its mini-grant awards from $250 to $500 each.  This past September, four early childhood programs in Arizona were awarded grants, giving them the opportunity to engage in projects advancing the care, education and well-being of young children (birth-8) with and with and at-risk for developmental delays, and those with exceptionalities. In addition, one additional program was awarded partial funding. The projects receiving awards have to employ recommended practices in prevention, intervention, and educational opportunities; those supporting choices for full access for young children and their families in natural settings; and/or those enhancing cultural competence.

The AZ DEC Board conducted a blind review of the submissions, and funds were awarded to these  programs:

    1. Improving Pre-School Playground Access - This project creates a path connecting sidewalk and playground to promote more independent participation for 6 pre-school students with functional deficits in gross motor development. Awarded to: Sue Zislis, Physical Therapist, Creighton Elementary School District, Phoenix, AZ.
    2. Preschool Community Garden - The garden is a community effort among four general education and special education classes. The project will help build a sense of community between preschool classes and the rest of the school. This well-written grant was linked to AZ EC Standards and was awarded to: Beth McMillen, Katarina Paganik, Lisa Simmons and Heather Harris of the Peoria Unified School District, Peoria, AZ.
    3. Trip to the Phoenix Zoo -This project involves taking preschool children and their parents on a trip to the zoo to allow the children to experience the animals. The children will also experience zoo-related educational opportunities in the classroom related to language development and other individual goals. Awarded to: Amber Oliver, Jordan Elementary, Mesa Public Schools, Mesa, AZ.
    4. Leveled Reading Home School Connection - This project targets the 50% of first grade children in this school who struggle with beginning reading skills, and enhances the chances of those identified with special needs in achieving academic success in this crucial area. This grant also linked AZ Standards to the project objectives. A set of Leveled Readers for classroom and home use plus an assessment tool are awarded to: Kelly Murchison, Blue Ridge Elementary, Blue Ridge Unified School District, Lakeside, AZ
