Transferable
cultural reference is made through the
symbols and icons that inform relationships in Jim Nolans
sculpture. An altered Chevy Logo becomes the structure of
a minimalist sculpture in Standard/Double
Standard. Constructed from wood
and presented as is, the work straddles the gap between
recognition and anonymity.
The loop is picked up in System for
D. Boon.
The piece makes reference to the lead singer from the 80s
Californian punk band, the Minutemen, who died from injuries
sustained in a car accident at the age of 27. A larger that life
stereo system is constructed as a monument that plays a loop
of the sound of cars passing by on a highway, reminiscent
of the soundscape that begins the bands last album.
