Walk a Mile - A Social Studies Immigration Project

comingamericapsd.jpg

Where are you from?

A question with a variety of answers if you live in America.

This six session program integrates Social Studies, Immigration Patterns, Geography, cultural History with Multicultural Learning experiences. Creative Writing, Music and Theatre combine to meet curriculum goals, encourage personal creativity and build stronger community and better understanding between groups.

Lesson Plan and Unit Support Study Guides are provided to participating teachers.  A minimum of one pre-planning visit at your site is requested.

Working with teaching artists and partner teacher, students identify the variety of immigrant groups that personify America.  From this information, students  are "cast" in immigrant groups and work with teaching artists to create characters and write personal narrative detailing the 5 W’s and H of each character's personal journey to America. These details become original first person monologues for performance.

Lessons incorporate lessons in Self respect and Group dynamics, Geography and maps, music and math, historical and cultural research, journal writing, composition of original monologue and poetry, and result in a workshop performance that further develops increased knowledge, empathy for others and deeper personal understanding of the self, our country and the unique strengths born of our cultural diversity.
