I first heard this song as the David Bowie version on the “Midnight Special” probably around the mid-70’s. I still remember him looking up at the blonde on a pedestal. I’ve always loved the melody and one day I was fooling around with an open Delta blues tuning and sang the melody over it and worked out an arrangement. I did some acoustic shows around town with Anne McCue and Carl Byron and I loved Anne’s vocal and slide, and Carl’s accordion – the song had a Delta blues meets Parisian café thing. Anne’s vocal and slide performance here is haunting and Carl’s accordion is incredibly atmospheric. The lyric here is archetypal – never realized watching Bowie in the 70’s it would be as relevant to my life as it turned out. |
