"Protest against unnecessary and cruel OCU study involving 120 cats"
Sample Text of Letter:
Dear (insert name here):
I am contacting you to voice my concern regarding the proposed Ohio State University study that would use cats to test the effects of drug abuse on patients with HIV. According to the November 2000 on-line issue of CATS magazine, 120 healthy cats would be injected with the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) then given doses of methamphetamine.
I understand that the purpose of this study is to further advances in HIV research. However, this study would be unnecessarily cruel and its potential findings may not be highly relevant to humans. According to Carol P. Mendell, DVM Ph.D. from the Animal Protection Institute of America, "it is pointless to examine the interactions between a virus that is a poor model for AIDS and a potentially toxic drug about which little is known in cats." (Retrieved November 8, 2000, from the World Wide Web: http://www.catsmag.com/nov2000/inthenews.html).
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has not yet approved funding for this study and I hope that my letter will help convince you to prevent the funding and execution of this study. I also look forward to hearing that the Ohio State University decided to cancel this study and develops a more ethical and relevant way to advance HIV research.
Sincerely,
