Memo: Assignment
Imagine yourself in the future. You have accepted a position of an instructional materials specialist for a text book publisher. Your
editor finds out that you have done some research in the area of math history, thanks to your wonderful former teacher. Your
boss is thrilled that she has such an expert on her staff, since she has just been given the assignment to produce a workbook on math
history for students 12-18 years old. You know that many text books feature the history of European mathematics, so you decide you will
focus on non-European topics.
Think about the variety of subjects you delved into on the math hunt. Choose any one area from the web hunt itself, or from the page of
resources provided after you completed the hunt. Design an activity page for students based on further research you do on that one
subject. Remember, you have to present this to your editor!
Requirements:
1. Write a one-page typed justification for why your page should be included in the new workbook. This should include the answers to the
following questions:
What is the topic and what is the history of the topic?
Why do you feel this topic is interesting, relevant or important to students 12-18 years old?
In general, why do societies develop math and what good is math?
2. Design the workbook page itself. This is an activity page. It should include:
Creative presentation of the topic at a level appropriate for 12-18 year old students.
Catchy visual design; pictures, design and/or artwork are required to be used in some way.
At least three activities for the student completing the workbook page.
Grading: See your editor (teacher) for grading scale of this project.
