John Knox is an assistant professor of geography at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, where
he teaches and does research generally related to weather. He grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, the grandson of a college coach/referee and an early
women's college basketball player. After graduating with a degree in math from UAB, John earned his Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison, and arrived at UGA in 2001. John integrates baseball into his teaching; for example, his introductory meteorology textbook begins
with his first-hand account of a tornadic thunderstorm that abruptly ended the Southern League All-Stars exhibition game against the Atlanta Braves in Birmingham
in August 1969. His first sabermetrics research article, "The 100 Top-Fielding MLB Pitchers, Circa 1900-2008," was published in the Summer 2009 issue of the
Baseball Research Journal.
