Greg Benson's art is whimsical, colorful and infused with
child-like spirit as well as adult intellect that unite to make his work compelling.
His naive style is one that he began purposefully cultivating years
ago. The narrative style conjures images of cave drawings, or of the "ledger
art" of the Plains indians of the 19th century. He records political, personal and
social events with the use of simply outlines figures, bright, well-developed color, and a
wacky, jumbled composition - all of which combine in surprising and delightful paintings.
Many of the works have words painted on them, serving as guides of a
sort, to show us through the complex, multi-layered meaning of his art. He accomplishes
his messages with satire and stylistic conviction.
