History of the Piedmont Model Yacht Club

The PMYC was formed in 1981 by Frank Angel, Harry Studstill and Don Gilliam. The Club's first Regatta was held on April 15, 1982, dubbed the "IRS Blues", and was attended by eight boats from three states. Virtually each year since, PMYC has held at least one regatta, even hosting the Annual Class Championship Regatta (known as an "ACCR") in 1987.

Currently having a club membership of 15, most semimonthly races are attended by 5 to 10 skippers. Many are "big" boat sailors; some have learned to sail at our pond. Regattas have been attended by skippers from all over the U.S. and Canada.

We recently lost our founder and leader, Frank Angel on February 21, 2011. It is hard but we will carry on in his spirit.
