I've always had a special attraction to Hudson's smooth-running eight cylinder cars. This nice '47 came from the
collection of Herbert Bell, Gainesville, Georgia. For several years after moving to the Atlanta area in 1997,
I had helped Mr. Bell keep his collection in good running order, and I talked him into selling me this one in 2003.
This Commodore sedan was cosmetically restored in 1989, but almost looks like it was done last month. It had only
been driven on brief "exercise runs" in the Gainesville area until we acquired it. Since it doesn't have A/C we drive
it mostly in the cooler months. Equipped with overdrive and a 4.11:1 rear axle ratio, it's a very comfortable road cruiser.
In June, 2008 I began the project of removing and rebuilding the engine and installing a new clutch. As always,
these projects tend to grow during the process. I decided to replace all the rather shabby looking original under-hood
wiring with new vintage-type wire, and have cleaned and painted all the frame and steering gear parts that can be seen
when the hood is open. I also installed a dual exhaust manifold I had made for the engine. It sounds like
a big V8! The car was back on the road in mid 2009.
