Phil Weldon's Thermodynamics of CPU Cooling

I thought I'd start with a two dimensional heat flow simulation for a copper cold plate used with a Peltier array and an Intel "Coppermine" FC-PGA CPU.

This is the result of a simulation run using an Intel "Coppermine" CPU producing 25 watts of heat, a 12 mm thick copper coldplate and a 40 mm wide Peltier array. WinTherm 5.0 was used.

Each element is 2 mm along the X axis and 1 mm along the Y axis. The Peltier array is represented by the 20 elements along the X axis. The FC-PGA is represented by the middle 4 elements on the side opposite the Peltier array. The copper cold plate is represented by the 20 by 12 rectangle of elements between the source and the sink. At either end of the FC-PGA line of elements is a single element representing a glass block.
