The museum shares the grounds of the famous Cistercian Abbey - which was mostly destroyed by Henry VIII after he had the Abbey and almost all the monks murdered - along with the Montagu Mansion & Gardens.  Lord Montagu and his family still live in the mansion, but it is open daily for tours... and is worth taking the time to see.

Above:  The James Bond Vehicles Museum is also on the grounds, housing the fantastic cars, motorcycles, boats, and airplanes from the famous "007" movies from the 60's through the present.

Above:  Another view of the monorail and a small portion of the exterior of the Motorcar Museum.  The museum has a great gift shop with dozens of different scale-model diecast model cars... many that couldn't be found anywhere else in Great Britain (which has a far greater variety at much more reasonable prices than are available in the U.S.).

Above:  The museum has well over a dozen fully-equipped garages from the early auto days.  Most have prolific stock of parts, supplies, under-counter paraphenalia, and work-in-process autos... along with recorded "shop talk" in thick accents using car part names that are often difficult to figure out.  Additionally, it had many other small exhibits that were very fully-equipped with parts and quite authentic.

Britain's National Motorcar Museum

The Great Britiain National Motorcar Museum is a wonderful place, filled with hundreds of automobiles from the 1890's through the 1960's, exhibits, and old full-scale garage replicas.

Additionally, on the same grounds is the James Bond "007 Auto Museum" featuring almost all the vehichles used in all the 007 movies.

Cars are arranged by era - for example, there are dozens from World War II - and category (including beautiful collections of buses, races cars, motorcycles, etc.).  This museum is far bigger and better organized than ones in the U.S.

Left:  A combination garage / parts store - it often took 20 to 30 minutes of careful attention just to get an overview of the many different items packed into these displays, reminding one of small garages in the U.S. back in the late 1940's and early 1950's.
