Below: Roundabouts are everywhere... and they are very effective at keeping the traffic flowing quickly - far more so than our system of traffic lights and stop signs.  Most have three to six outlets, but we counted one with 26!!!

Below: A typical country scene in Scotland.  The road system all over Great Britain is excellent.  It's a small nation with a large population, so there are far more villages, towns and cities and, thus, far more roads.  Studying an atlas can be daunting, just due to the physical number of different roads.

Below: Dual Carriageways or "Motorways" are the British equivalent of our freeways and Interstate system.  The speeds are frenetic, averaging about 85 with many going nearly 100 - and woe be to the driver that gets into the center or fast lane to pass and goes at less than 85.  The polite demeanor of the British citizen ends on the Motorways and the roundabouts... laying on the horn (rather than a single "beep") is the norm.

Below: Some signage and road markings are enigmatic.  It took several days to figure out that these zig-zag markings meant that there was a traffic light or dangerous cross walk ahead.

Below: The Royal Postal System is all red:  Trucks and postal drop cans (They're about the size of ours, but cylindrical) are solid red.  The post office buildings have a huge red band painted across the front... even if they're a 200 year old structure that would be a beautiful "historical site" in the U.S.

Below: This is a brand new taxi.  They're made this way on purpose... and there was a backlash when they were changed to this from the boxy, 1930's look that had lasted until recently.  They look small and quaint on the outside, but are extremely roomy and luxurious on the inside, seating four to six people in the back compartment in considerable comfort.

Below: A lovely roundabout in Dunsmuir, Scotland - which had only about eight outlets.  This was one of the few that had buildings and a restaurant facing directly onto it with entrances straight off the roundabout.  One was an Indian restaurant, where all the Indian waiters spoke with a Scots burr so thick as to be incomprehensible.

Cars & Road Signs in Great Britain

The motorcars and road signs one sees on the roads and motorways of Great Britain look entirely different than those in the U.S. or Canada.

U.S. cars are quite rare and there are not nearly as many Japanese models, as well.  The vast majority are French, Spanish, German, and British.  Some road signs make perfect sense... some are anywhere from difficult to impossible to understand... some are downright amusing.

Even for the non-US marques (brands) with which we're familiar - Nissan, Toyota, Audi, Mercedes, Kia, Hyundai, etc. - there are many models (especially on the sub-compact end) that just aren't sold at all in the U.S.  The two big American SUV's we saw looked out of place and ungainly... and were almost as big as some of their buses!

Signs are generously sprinkled all over the country - there seems to be a greater concern for not just the safety of pedestrians, but for many different categoies of "walkers."  There was a similar sign to this for "Elderly People" near every seniors' center, hospice, hospital, and many market areas.

Sometimes a road situation will suddenly appear which, due to the opposite-side driving, leaves one wondering what to do... not that anything is necessary - it's just a surprise seeing a new situation that might call for a totally different set of options in the U.S.  This scene, which would indicate a "Y" in the U.S. is simply a two-land separating into a divided highway ahead with the oncoming traffic rejoining the two-lane traffic.
